CBD Salve Recipe: Awesome Hemp Salves You Can Make at Home
Although CBD products are sometimes presented as a scientific miracle, the truth is you can make them in your own home.
There are a lot of CBD salve recipes that you can try by yourself. That way, you can save some money and be certain that all the ingredients are completely natural.
Making a CBD salve is relatively easy. All you need is some CBD, wax, and essential oil. However, it can get a bit messier if you decide to decarboxylate cannabis by yourself.
Before we get into details, let's see what makes CBD salves so great and why you should use them on a permanent basis!
What is CBD?
Hemp is full of wondrous substances. It has various cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, vitamins, and minerals. One of the most prominent chemical compounds that can be found in the plant is CBD or cannabidiol.
Although these items are often called "CBD products," that doesn't necessarily mean they only have cannabidiol. In fact, they have a plethora of chemical compounds, as found in hemp.
Some experts believe that by combining all these ingredients together, you can achieve an "entourage effect." In other words, using all chemical compounds at the same time should provide an even bigger impact.
The reason why cannabis products have a bad rep is because of another substance – THC. This is the main chemical compound responsible for the psychedelic high.
Luckily, hemp doesn’t have a lot of it. The plant has traces of THC, which is why it is mostly safe for human use. However, that doesn’t mean you should overdo it with CBD products and use them irresponsibly.
How does CBD work, and how can it help me?
Before you put something in your body, you probably want to know how it works and what kind of a long-term effect it has?
Keep in mind that cannabinoids were discovered just recently (in the 20th century, to be precise). We have various questions regarding their inner workings. However, one thing that was discovered is that cannabinoids can stimulate your endocannabinoid system.
This system is also a recent discovery (discovered in 1992), but what we gathered so far is that the system can regulate various internal processes. It is important for energy storage and nutrient transport.
To top it all off, it has lots of different potential functions such as regulating sleep, memory, appetite, stress, immunity, reproduction, etc.
In theory, among the CBD salves benefits should be the ability to stimulate and improve the function of the endocannabinoid system. As such, they can potentially regulate all these processes that we've previously mentioned.
Again, you shouldn't take anything for granted because we are still learning about the substance. However, you cannot deny the importance of this part of the body.
Based on scientific data and empiric evidence, there is a direct correlation between the use of CBD and better sleep. CBD might also prove to be useful for pain, mood, and most importantly, relaxation.
If used as a topical (the way we use CBD salve), it can be a good antioxidant, helping us remove signs of aging. It might also provide hydration to the skin and improve its overall shine. This is why a lot of people use it as a supplement.
CBD oil that is derived from hemp should be much better than the oil derived from cannabis. This is because cannabis has a much higher THC percentage, and thus, it might get you high.
Hemp salves are regarded as very safe. If you encounter some side effects, they might come in the form of drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, appetite changes, etc. Generally speaking, these are not serious issues, but you should still be aware of them.
CBD salve recipe: Step-by-step guide
Here are the things that you’ll need for your DIY CBD salve recipe:
- You would need a 1 ½ cup of infused CBD oil or 1 ½ coconut oil
- 10 grams of decarboxylated cannabis
- 5 grams of raw cannabis (optional)
- ¼ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup of wax (better go with organic wax)
- Any essential oil
- 1 tablespoon of shea butter or vitamin E oil (optional)
- Cheesecloth (if you’re going to strain it)
- Mixing bowl and jars for storage
Decarboxylation of hemp
You need to start by baking hemp. This is the necessary step if you want your CBD salve to have full potency.
Decarboxylation is a process that activates chemical compounds within the hemp. In their original state, CBD and THC are acids.
Unfortunately, our bodies are not able to properly process these substances. This is why, through the process of decarboxylation, we turn them into forms that are better utilized by our organisms. Otherwise, your hemp salve will not provide the necessary impact.
Hemp decarboxylation is a simple process. Just take hemp, break it into small parts, and spread it over a baking sheet. Place it in the oven and bake it at 250 degrees for 30 minutes.
Creating CBD-infused oil
In order to make CBD-infused oil, you will need a carrier oil. This is where coconut oil comes into play. If you wish to skip this step, you can just buy CBD-infused oil. That way, you also wouldn't have to bake hemp during step 1.
Here is the tricky part with cannabidiol-infusion. Given that you’ve already baked hemp, you shouldn’t overdo it with additional heating.
Otherwise, your CBD, which is now in its optimal form, will lose its potency. So, this step should be done at 120 to 150 degrees temperature.
Here is how you go about it:
- You will need two pots so you can make a double-boiler. Put water in the bottom one and coconut oil in the upper one.
- Add decarboxylated hemp to the upper pot with oil. Stir it a bit. If you wish, you can add the optional raw hemp.
- The mixture should be left for 30 to 60 minutes. You can stir it occasionally.
- When it's done, you will have to strain it. Take a strainer and cheesecloth. Put a new pot below them and start straining the oil through cheesecloth. Once it goes through it, you can squeeze the cheesecloth a bit more so that you take as much oil as possible from it.
Mix everything together
Now that your CBD oil is ready, you’ve done the hardest part.
Take a pot and put wax in it. Put it on a stove and heat it until it melts. Once the wax is ready, you can add CBD oil and olive oil to it.
During this step, you can add all other optional ingredients such as vitamins or additional essential oil. You can even overdo it a bit as long as the ingredients are healthy, natural, and they don’t change the chemistry of the mixture.
Make sure to stir it properly as all the parts have to mash well. Once it’s over, you can remove the pot from the stove and place the content into jars (or whatever you’re using).
Like with the previous step, you should be careful not to overheat CBD oil. It has already been processed twice, and you don’t want to destroy its crucial ingredients.
Cool it off
Once the mixture is placed in jars, you will have to put it in a dark, cool place. It is best to place it in a storage room.
Make sure that the jars are not getting a lot of sunlight. Alternatively, you can use cobalt jars that are good at preventing excess lighting from reaching the mixture.
When it cools off, a thick layer may appear on the surface. However, you should be worried about this! This CBD salve recipe is all that you ever needed.
Now, you too can create awesome, healthy topicals at your own home. The mixture can last up to a year when made at home, which is more than enough time to use it.
